What Really Happened to the Woman Who Disappeared from a luxury yacht?

The BBC has launched a new investigation into the disappearance of Sarm Heslop, who vanished from a luxury yacht in the US Virgin Islands more than four years ago. The documentary Missing in Paradise: Searching for Sarm is now streaming on BBC iPlayer.

Newly released CCTV footage, shown publicly for the first time, captures Sarm and her boyfriend, American yacht captain Ryan Bane, walking hand-in-hand along a dock on St John before boarding a dinghy and returning to his £500,000 catamaran, Siren Song, on the night of 7 March 2021. Hours later, Bane reported Sarm missing. Her body has never been found.

Authorities initially suggested she may have fallen overboard. However, inconsistencies in the timeline provided by Bane have raised fresh questions. While he claimed they returned to the yacht around 22:00, the CCTV timestamp shows them leaving the dock at 20:45. Police say this unaccounted-for hour remains suspicious.

Bane has never been formally questioned, invoking his constitutional rights to prevent police searches of his yacht and to avoid interviews. He later left the islands and has not returned. His lawyer insists there is no evidence he was involved in Sarm’s disappearance, though critics note he failed to follow standard emergency protocols when reporting her missing.

Sarm, 41 at the time, was a former flight attendant from Southampton who had been working as a chef aboard Siren Song. Friends describe her as adventurous and free-spirited, while her mother, Brenda, says the family still cannot grieve properly without knowing the truth: “We all deserve to know what happened to her and to bring her home.”

The case remains officially classified as a missing person investigation, but Sarm’s family and supporters are calling for it to be treated as a no-body murder case, which they believe would allow authorities to take stronger action.

Despite years without answers, her loved ones vow not to give up. “She was the love of my life, my baby girl,” her mother said. “I’ll never stop fighting to find out what happened.”
