Cruise Passenger Dies After Being Left Behind on Lizard Island

An 80-year-old Australian woman has been found dead on Lizard Island, part of the Great Barrier Reef, after being left behind by the Coral Adventurer cruise ship.

The woman was hiking with fellow passengers on Saturday when she decided to rest and became separated from the group. The ship departed at sunset, only realising she was missing hours later. Her body was discovered the next morning.

Records show the Coral Adventurer, carrying 120 passengers and 46 crew, had departed Cairns just a day earlier on October 24. Lizard Island was one of the first stops on the 80,000-Australian-dollar ($50,000) cruise around the country, via Cape York and towards Western Australia.

Authorities, including the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, have launched an investigation. Coral Expeditions, which operates the ship, said it was deeply saddened by the “tragic death” and is assisting the woman’s family and police.
