Zubeen Garg, Indian Cultural Icon Drowned at Sea

The music world was left in shock after the tragic death of Zubeen Garg, one of India’s most beloved cultural icons. The Assamese singer, composer, and actor — best known for his soulful hit Ya Ali — drowned while swimming in the sea without a life jacket off the coast of Saint John’s Island in Singapore on September 19, 2025.

Garg was in Singapore to attend the North East India Festival when the tragedy struck. According to reports, he had gone swimming during a yacht trip and removed his life jacket for a second dive. Moments later, he reportedly suffered a sudden medical emergency in the water. Despite being pulled out quickly and rushed to Singapore General Hospital, doctors could not save him. Authorities later confirmed drowning as the official cause of death.

News of his passing triggered an outpouring of grief across India, especially in his home state of Assam. Thousands of fans filled the streets, singing his songs, lighting candles, and carrying his photos. On social media, the hashtag #JusticeForZubeen trended for days as fans demanded answers and questioned the circumstances surrounding the accident.
For millions, Zubeen Garg was more than a musician — he was a voice of identity and pride for the Northeast, a bridge between regional culture and mainstream India.

When his body was brought back to Assam, thousands of people joined his funeral for a final farewell, as seen in emotional videos circulating online.
