Tsunami Warning Issued After Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Hits Panama

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake has struck south-central Panama, damaging buildings and triggering tsunami warnings for several countries along the Pacific coast.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), approximately 4.6 million people experienced moderate to severe shaking. The US Tsunami Warning System warned of possible tsunami waves affecting Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile and Mexico.

The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of around 12 km, approximately 10 km from Pitaloza Arriba. Shallow earthquakes can cause more severe surface damage, while aftershocks were also reported.

Buildings were reportedly damaged in several Panamanian towns, and people were evacuated from buildings in Panama City, around 200 km from the epicentre. The full extent of the damage and any potential casualties remain unclear.
