The Elephant-Shaped Rock of Kimolos-Greece

A natural rock formation near Goupa on the Greek island of Kimolos has become one of the area’s most distinctive coastal sights.

Along the volcanic coastline of Kimolos, a rock formation near Rema and Goupa appears to take the shape of an elephant when viewed from the water. Its outline includes a feature resembling a trunk extending toward the Aegean.

The formation is entirely natural, shaped over time by wind, waves and erosion. The effect is particularly striking from the sea, with the pale volcanic rock contrasting with the turquoise waters.

For yachts cruising the Cyclades, Goupa offers a distinctive combination of natural geology and traditional coastal architecture: an unusual rock formation, carved boat shelters and the characteristic whitewashed houses of Kimolos.
