Luxury World Cruise Ship Strands Passengers in Cambodia

A luxury cruise ship on a voyage planned to last for years, with cabin prices reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars, has suspended its journey due to soaring fuel costs, leaving its passengers stranded in Cambodia.

A Victim of War and Rising Costs

Setting sail from Belfast in October 2024 with the promise of a "continuous voyage around the world," the luxury ship Villa Vie Odyssey had been on the road for over 750 days. However, after the Iran war broke out earlier this year, global fuel prices skyrocketed, making the ship's operations unsustainable. The company announced that the monthly fuel cost per cabin on the Asia route had surged from $1,800 to a staggering $8,000.

Sudden Evacuation Order and Shocked Passengers

Villa Vie Residences stated that despite taking measures to reduce fuel consumption - such as slowing down cruising speed and spending more time in port - these steps were not enough to offset the cost increases.Noting that passing the full price hike onto passengers was not a realistic solution, management issued a sudden order on Tuesday at 6:00 AM instructing roughly 200 passengers to vacate the ship by 2:00 PM the same day.

Hastily disembarked in the Cambodian port city of Sihanoukville, the passengers were left in shock.

Company Pursuing Restructuring

The operator of the ship, which set sail after months of repair delays and millions of pounds in costs, announced it would spend the next 60 days on restructuring and recapitalization efforts. For the passengers who purchased cabins for prices ranging from $120,000 to $440,000 or rented them for $3,500 a month to live at sea for a lifetime, the future remains uncertain.
