Snorkelling & boat tours in Zakynthos National Park
The Zakynthos National Park, also known as the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, is one of the most valuable protected areas in Greece. It is located in the south of the island of Zakynthos and covers large parts of the bay of Laganas and the surrounding islands. What makes this national park so special is its importance as a breeding ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).
Turtle paradise in Laganas Bay
The expansive Laganas Bay with its gently sloping sandy beach is not only ideal for families, but also a protected habitat for these fascinating sea creatures. The turtles lay their eggs here between May and October - a unique natural phenomenon. If you are lucky, you can observe turtles while snorkelling or from a boat without disturbing them.
The park not only protects the turtles, but also the rare monk seal, numerous bird species and sensitive seagrass meadows. The small island of Marathonisi - often referred to as "Turtle Island" - is also part of the park and offers Caribbean-style beaches with crystal-clear water.
Water fun with responsibility
The national park is a real highlight for water lovers. Snorkelling, swimming and paddling are permitted in designated zones and offer unforgettable experiences in turquoise waters. Motorboats are only permitted with restrictions, which protects nature and preserves the tranquillity.
Boat tours around the coast, past caves, steep cliffs and hidden beaches, are an absolute must. The Keri Cave is a particular favourite - an ideal spot for kayakers and divers.
The famous "Blue Caves" in the north of the island can also be explored by small boat and offer a fascinating play of light under water. The national park combines nature conservation and gentle tourism in an exemplary manner.
Experience and understand nature conservation
Visitors are informed about the correct behaviour in the protected area by information boards, rangers and local guides. This ensures that the unique underwater world is preserved for future generations.
At the same time, there are many opportunities for hiking and exploring on land - always with a view of the sea. The combination of biodiversity, clear water, calm bays and protected nature is what makes the Zakynthos National Park so special.
Anyone who loves the sea and is passionate about nature will find the perfect holiday destination here. It is not without reason that the park is one of the most important marine protected areas in the Mediterranean.
