Northern Japan on Alert as 7.6 Quake Triggers Tsunami Warnings
A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture late Monday, triggering tsunami warnings across northern Japan.
Authorities warn that waves up to three meters could hit coastal areas of Iwate, Aomori, and parts of Hokkaido, with advisories also in place for Miyagi and Fukushima. Residents in multiple municipalities have been ordered to evacuate and urged to stay away from the coastline and river mouths.
Strong shaking was recorded in Hachinohe, where local reports say there are several injured but conscious individuals. Officials caution that aftershocks are likely.
The government has activated an emergency task force, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructing authorities to prioritize tsunami alerts, evacuations, and rapid damage assessment.
