This Summer, Over-24m Yachts Cannot Anchor in the French Riviera and Corsica

France is strictly enforcing anchoring rules for yachts over 24 metres in the French Riviera and Corsica. Yachts that anchor in protected seagrass areas now face fines of up to €150,000.

The rules aim to protect Posidonia oceanica, a slow-growing seagrass that supports marine life, absorbs carbon, and protects coastlines. Damage caused by large yacht anchors can take centuries to recover.

Yachts over 24 metres must avoid seagrass zones and use approved mooring buoys or designated anchoring areas. Captains are expected to follow updated charts and tools such as the DONIA app, with repeat violations risking heavy penalties or bans.

For charter guests, reduced anchoring freedom is changing cruising plans. Some are now choosing alternative destinations with fewer restrictions, where anchoring is simpler and more flexible.

Sustainability is now a key part of the luxury yachting experience in French waters.
