Mediterranean Anchoring Regulations Guide 2026 launched

Mediterranean Anchoring Regulations Report 2026 prepared by Swiss Ocean Tech Ltd. (AnchorGuardian) as a practical guide for captains, crew and yacht managers.

According to the Mediterranean Anchoring Regulations Report 2026

The 2026 environment is shaped by three major trends:

Greater protection of sensitive seabed habitats
Increased local enforcement
More digital tools to help captains plan safely

The most important thing to remember is that there is no single set of anchoring rules for the entire Mediterranean. Regulations can vary not only from country to country, but also between regions, marine parks, ports and local authorities.

Here is a quick overview:

France
France has some of the most detailed anchoring restrictions in the Mediterranean, particularly for larger yachts. Rules can vary depending on the region and protected area, with additional requirements applying to very large vessels.

Spain
The protection of Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa seagrass meadows is a major priority. Anchoring on protected seagrass is prohibited, and captains are encouraged to use authorized low-impact mooring systems.

Croatia
Protected areas and concession zones play a major role. A location appearing on a nautical chart does not necessarily mean that free anchoring is permitted. Local fees and concession arrangements may apply.

Italy
Italy has no single nationwide anchoring framework. Regulations are often determined by Marine Protected Areas and local authorities, meaning rules can differ considerably between regions such as Sardinia, Tuscany and Sicily.

Türkiye
Anchoring restrictions are often destination-specific. The Fethiye–Göcek region is one of the most closely managed areas, with reservation systems in place for designated moorings.

Digital planning is becoming essential

Before arriving at an anchorage, captains and crews should check official digital resources to identify protected areas, seabed types and local restrictions.
