Greece Expands Ban on Sunbeds as Protected Beaches Reach 250 Amid Overtourism

Greece has expanded its environmental protections, increasing the number of beaches where sunbeds, umbrellas, and other commercial activity are banned to 250, up from 238 last year and 198 in 2024.

The measure targets remote and ecologically sensitive coastlines, including areas within the EU Natura 2000 network, aiming to protect biodiversity and preserve natural landscapes. Species such as monk seals and loggerhead turtles are among those benefiting from the restrictions.

Authorities say the policy is part of wider efforts to manage overtourism, as Greece recorded around 38 million visitors last year. Officials are also weighing broader limits on tourism infrastructure in overcrowded destinations.
