New Zealand Advances Electric Hydrofoiling Tourism

New Zealand is positioning itself as a global leader in electric hydrofoiling tourism, supported by vessels already in commercial service.

In January 2025, Auckland-based Vessev introduced the VS-9 with Fullers360, the world’s first certified electric hydrofoiling tourism vessel. Approved by Maritime New Zealand, the VS-9 cruises at 25 knots with a range of 50 nautical miles, rising above the water on foils for a smooth, silent and zero-emission journey.

This achievement is rooted in New Zealand’s long involvement in the America’s Cup, where decades of foiling and marine engineering expertise have shaped today’s advanced vessel designs.

By late 2026, two Vessev vessels are expected to operate premium routes, including Lake Taupō, bringing electric hydrofoiling to both coastal and freshwater destinations.

With regular commercial operations now underway, New Zealand is demonstrating how electric hydrofoiling can deliver a quiet, efficient and environmentally responsible experience for modern tourism.
