Cruise Ship Offers ‘Golden Passport’ to Live at Sea Forever

Would you trade a retirement home for a cabin on a cruise ship? One company believes many people will.

Villa Vie Residences has launched a unique “Golden Passport” programme, giving passengers the chance to live permanently at sea. The idea is simple: instead of paying for a retirement village, residents can buy or lease a cabin on the company’s ship, Odyssey, and spend the rest of their lives travelling the globe.

The ship sails on continuous world voyages, stopping at 425 ports in 147 countries every three-and-a-half years. Cabins can be owned outright, rented, or leased for life. Dining, housekeeping, laundry, medical check-ups, and even wine with meals are included. Guests can invite friends and family onboard for $129 (£96) a day.

Pricing is based on age. A lifetime cabin costs $99,999 (£75,000) for passengers over 90, while those between 55 and 60 pay $399,999 (£223,650). The fee covers everything, including port taxes and service charges.

The company believes this could change how people view retirement. As CEO Kathy Villalba puts it: “Life moves quickly, and the regret most people share is that they didn’t travel the world when they had the chance.”

Picture it more like a never-ending journey than a retirement plan: you might set sail from Germany, watch the midnight sun in Norway, drift down to Portugal’s golden shores, island-hop across Greece then visiting Turkey, then down through Dubai, Singapore, and Bali before crossing the Pacific to Sydney, San Francisco, and Vancouver. With hundreds of ports stitched together like beads on a string, the journey never really ends - the ship simply carries you from one horizon to the next.
