The Bahamas by catamaran – an itinerary suggestion

Are you planning a trip to the Bahamas but aren’t familiar with the area and aren’t quite sure which route to take? If so, I’ve got a few tips for you!

It’s best to start in Nassau. You could also charter from Marsh Harbour, but it’s a long way from there to the Exumas, and many charter companies don’t allow you to sail south.

The first and last legs are the longest at around 35–40 nm and take you across open but shallow waters. In between, you’ll mostly be sailing relaxed legs of between 5 and 20 nm.

Don’t plan to cover everything on your way south. Depending on the wind, it’s worth splitting the stops between the outward and return journeys. This way, you stay flexible and avoid unnecessarily tough legs against the wind and waves. Plus, you won’t have all the highlights one after the other, allowing you to better soak up the atmosphere of this fantastic sailing area.

Highlights along the way:

- Shroud Cay: mangroves, dinghy tour through the channels, lots of turtles
- Compass Cay: clear water, nurse sharks in the marina
- Norman’s Cay: good marina, beaches, plane wreck for snorkelling
- Pig Beach: very touristy, best to go early or late
- Staniel Cay: supplies, restaurants, petrol station
- Black Point: good anchorages, relaxed atmosphere

Plan your shopping carefully; you’ll probably only be able to eat out once or twice (Staniel Cay and Black Point).

In two weeks you’ll cover around 250 nautical miles, depending on your route and detours. You can also head further south, but 250 nautical miles is easily enough for a reasonably relaxed trip.

Avoid the weeks around New Year’s Eve, as it’s significantly more expensive and crowded then.

Good luck!
