Lake Chiemsee – Bavaria’s ‘sea’, nestled between the Alpine panorama and a water sports paradise
Anyone visiting Lake Chiemsee for the first time will quickly understand why it is affectionately known as the ‘Bavarian Sea’. Set against the imposing backdrop of the Chiemgau Alps, Bavaria’s largest lake covers almost 80 square kilometres and is one of the most popular leisure and holiday destinations in southern Germany. Whether you’re a sailor, a family, a cyclist or simply looking to relax – Lake Chiemsee combines stunning natural beauty with a wide range of leisure activities and an excellent tourist infrastructure.
Impressive size and depth
With an area of around 80 square kilometres, Lake Chiemsee is the largest lake in Bavaria and, after Lake Constance and Lake Müritz, the third-largest natural lake in Germany. Its maximum length is just under 13 kilometres, and its greatest width is slightly more than 6 kilometres. The deepest point is around 74 metres, whilst the average depth is around 25 metres. The water level is approximately 518 metres above sea level.

A stunning location in the Chiemgau
The lake is situated in the Chiemgau region of Upper Bavaria, about 80 kilometres south-east of Munich and around 70 kilometres west of Salzburg. The view of the Chiemgau Alps, with the striking Kampenwand, is particularly impressive. This unique combination of water and mountains makes Lake Chiemsee one of Germany’s most beautiful natural destinations.
Good water quality
Lake Chiemsee is regarded as one of Germany’s cleanest large lakes. The water quality is regularly monitored and offers ideal conditions for swimming during the summer months. The water is clear and reaches temperatures of up to 24 degrees Celsius in high summer. At the same time, the lake is subject to special nature conservation measures to preserve its sensitive ecosystem in the long term.
A paradise for water sports enthusiasts
Hardly any other Bavarian lake offers such a wide variety of water sports:
Sailing
Windsurfing
Kitesurfing
Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP)
Kayaking and canoeing
Rowing
Swimming
Pedal boating and electric boating
Fishing
Sightseeing cruises with Chiemsee-Schifffahrt
It is above all the often favourable wind conditions that have made Lake Chiemsee a popular spot for sailors and windsurfers for decades. Numerous sailing schools and boat hire companies make it easy even for beginners to get started in water sports.
The most beautiful destinations
Herreninsel
The largest island on Lake Chiemsee is home to the world-famous Herrenchiemsee Palace, which King Ludwig II had built on the model of Versailles. Magnificent halls, extensive grounds and numerous guided tours attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
Fraueninsel
Just a few minutes’ boat ride away lies the romantic Fraueninsel with its Benedictine convent, small cafés, traditional fishermen’s cottages and cosy beer gardens. It is particularly well known for its smoked Chiemsee fish.
Prien am Chiemsee
Prien is regarded as the region’s tourist hub. This is where the boats depart for the islands. The lakeside promenade, numerous restaurants and the Prienavera water park make the town a popular holiday destination.

Kampenwand
Just a few kilometres away, a cable car takes visitors up to the Kampenwand. From there, there is a spectacular panoramic view across the whole of Lake Chiemsee and far into the Alpine foothills.
