The Dodecanese - an island world full of diversity, history and water adventures
The Dodecanese is a group of islands in the south-east Aegean Sea, close to the Turkish coast. The name means "twelve islands", but it actually includes over 160 islands, of which around 25 are inhabited. The best-known islands are Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Karpathos and Patmos.
Island hopping in a turquoise-blue paradise
The Dodecanese Islands combine fascinating nature, rich history and ideal conditions for water sports and island hopping. Sailors, snorkellers and beach holidaymakers in particular feel like they are in paradise here. Crystal-clear water, picturesque bays and often deserted beaches invite you to be explored.
The region offers plenty of sunshine, steady winds and well-maintained marinas - perfect for sailing trips. Those who prefer to take it easy on a motorboat will find sheltered anchorages everywhere. Windsurfers and kitesurfers also get their money’s worth, especially on Kos and Karpathos.
Diving, paddling, sailing, enjoying
The underwater world of the Dodecanese is colourful and varied. Kalymnos is particularly popular with divers - not only because of the sponge diving tradition, but also because of the wrecks and caves under water.
In addition to water sports, the history of the islands is also impressive: Rhodes shines with its medieval fortresses, while Patmos is known for its monastery and the Revelation of St John.
History and enjoyment on every corner
Venetian, Ottoman and Greek influences are formative for the architecture. Traditional villages, whitewashed houses and historic harbours characterise the image of many islands.
The Dodecanese also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine - from freshly caught fish to savoury mezedes and delicious baklava. In the tavernas right by the water, guests not only enjoy the food, but also breathtaking sunsets.
Versatility that inspires
Many islands are connected by ferry or speedboat, making them ideal for island hopping. Each place has its own character - from well-developed for tourism to almost untouched.
Especially in the low season, the Dodecanese Islands display a quiet, calm and unspoilt side. Those who enjoy hiking will find spectacular routes with sea views on islands such as Symi or Nisyros.
Whether you are active in sports, interested in culture or simply in search of the sun and the sea - the Dodecanese Islands offer something for everyone. The interplay of nature, water and history makes this archipelago unique. Once you’ve visited them, you’ll never want to leave.
